Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) are important tools in the field of infusion therapy. These devices are important for the administration of desiccant or irritating solutions to a patient, to allow for ease of administration in a patient who requires frequent venous access, etc.
Providers who wish to use these devices need specialized education to ensure patient safety. In this course participants will learn the following:
• Foundational knowledge of central venous access including vascular anatomy and rationale for use
• The various types of CVCs which are currently used in practice, how they function and why they are used
• Complications of CVCs, how to identify them and best naturopathic practices for their prevention and treatment
• Procedures for accessing focusing on proper techniques to minimize complications including proper site preparation, techniques to ensure device patency and how to properly “flush” the line after fluid administration and blood draws. This will include a practical workshop session on model “dummies” to ensure competency.
• Site Assessment, care and dressing
• Protocols for fluid administration, flushing and device maintenance
